With the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicking off in four days, it’s time to explore one of Group H’s biggest underdogs – Ghana.
Every day until November 20th, we’ll explore a different team represented in this year’s tournament, from Group A to Group H, including predictions about where they’ll end up.
Yesterday, we looked at who many have as a Group H favorite – CR7’s Portugal. Now we’ll explore a team we expect to finish at the bottom of the group below Portugal – the Black Stars of Ghana.
Nickname: Black Stars
Colors: Red, yellow, green
Coach: Otto Addo (Ghana)
Ghana is a team with a lot of chemistry but without a lot of name recognition.
Celta Vigo’s Joseph Aidoo and Leicester City’s Daniel Amartey hold down the defense, backing up midfielders Thomas Partey of Arsenal and Mohammed Kudus of Ajax.
Up top, they’ve got Jordan Ayew of Crystal Palace, and Iñaki Williams of Athletic Bilbao. Williams’ younger brother, Nico, will be one of the rising stars for Spain this year.
Qatar will be the fourth World Cup appearance for Ghana, whose best result came in 2010 when they reached the quarterfinals after upsetting the USMNT on a last-ditch goal in the 93rd minute. Bad memories.
Portugal is 3-5-6 in 2022, with losses to WC-qualifying teams Morocco, Japan, Qatar, and Brazil. Ghana did just win a friendly over Switzerland earlier today, though.
Tournament Prediction: Group stage exit.
Ghana is good enough to upset Portugal in their first match, especially if the Portuguese underperform like we expect them to. However, we have a hard time seeing Ghana snag wins over both South Korea and Uruguay in their final two matches. We think Ghana loses both of those games, possibly tying one.
With that, Ghana should exit at the group stage alongside Portugal with between 3-4 points.
