The US Guide to the 2022 FIFA World Cup – Germany

With the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicking off in 14 days, it’s time to explore one of Group E’s top contenders – Germany’s National 11.

Every day until November 20th, we’ll explore a different team represented in this year’s tournament, from Group A to Group H, including predictions about where they’ll end up.

Yesterday, we looked at The Costa Rica Tricolor, one of Group E’s biggest underdogs. We’ll now look at one of the favorites – Germany.

Germany

Group E

Nickname: National Eleven, DFB Team, DFB Eleven, The Team

Colors: White, black

Location:

Coach: Hansi Flick (Germany)

Top Players:

Germany are regular favorites to go deep because of their consistent roster depth. 2022 is no different – Barcelona’s Ter Stegen leads the German defense in goal, behind Real Madrid’s Antonio Rüdiger and Dortmund’s Niklas Süle. Germany’s midfield will be a problem for opponents with Kai Havertzİlkay GündoğanJamal Musiala, and Joshua Kimmich. Up top, they’re led by three Bayern strikers: Serge GnabryThomas Müller, and Leroy Sané. Unfortunately, Timo Werner of RB Leipzig just got injured and will miss the tournament.

Team History:

Qatar will mark the 20th World Cup appearance for Ze Germans. They are four-time World Cup champions, their most recent victory coming in 2014 over Messi’s Argentina. Germany are 2-5-1 in 2022, their most recent win being a 5-2 smackdown of Italy. Draws won’t be good enough to get The Team out of The Group Stages.

Tournament Prediction: Quarterfinals loss to Brazil.

Germany opens against Japan, which should be a tie or win for the Germans. We think Germany takes the next two games against Spain and Costa Rica, leaving Germany at the top of the group with somewhere between 7-9 points. At the top of Group E, Germany will likely take on and beat Croatia in the round of 16. They will be stopped short of a semi-final re-match against Argentina when they lose to Neymar’s Brazil in the quarterfinals.
