With the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicking off in 17 days, it’s time to explore one of Group D’s top contenders, the Danish Dynamite of Denmark.
Every day until November 20th, we’ll explore a different team represented in this year’s tournament, from Group A to Group H, including predictions about where they’ll end up.
Yesterday, we looked at Group D’s France and Australia. Today we’ll look at one of the group’s top contenders – Denmark.
Denmark
Group D
Nickname: The Red and Whites, Danish Dynamite
Colors: Red, white, and black
Location:
Coach: Kasper Hjulmand (Denmark)
Top Players:
Denmark has a fairly-solid squad that has been exceeding expectations in 2022. AC Milan’s Simon Kjær, Atalanta’s Joakim Mæhle, and Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen form a stout defense, backing midfielders Christian Eriksen, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, and Thomas Delaney of Man U, Tottenham, and Sevilla. Denmark’s biggest weakness is its attack, which lacks any recognizable star power. They have experienced players like Martin Braithwaite and Yussuf Poulsen, but the Great Danes will need one of their youngsters to break out this year to go deep into the knockout rounds.
Team History:
Qatar will mark the sixth World Cup appearance for the Danes. Their best results came in 1998 when they lost in the quarterfinals to Brazil. Denmark has been on fire in 2022, winning five of their last eight games, with two of those losses coming to reigning WC runner-up Croatia and the Netherlands. Denmark has beaten reigning champions France twice this year.
Tournament Prediction: Round of 16 loss to Argentina.
Denmark will face off against France, Tunisia, and Australia in Group D. The Danes open against Tunisia, which should either be a win or a tie for The Red and Whites. Denmark then faces France, who they’ve already beaten twice this season – can they do it again? We think France takes that one, with Denmark winning their final match against Australia. That should place The Danes in the unenviable position of second place in Group D, meaning they have to face the winner of Group C in the round of 16 – Messi’s unstoppable Argentina. Nobody, not even the Great Danes, is beating Messi this year.
