With the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicking off in 19 days, it’s time to explore one of Group C’s top contenders – Robert Lewandowski’s Poland.
Every day until November 20th, we’ll explore a different team represented in this year’s tournament, from Group A to Group H, including predictions about where they’ll end up.
Yesterday, we looked at Mexico, a team with high hopes and low chances in Group C. Today we’ll look at the top team competing for second place behind Argentina – Poland.
Nickname: The White and Red, The Eagles, The White Eagles
Colors: White, red
Coach: Czesław Michniewicz (Poland)
Robert Lewandowski of Dortmund, Bayern, and now Barcelona fame leads the Eagles in goals and name recognition. Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny plays for Juventus alongside forward Arkadiusz Milik, though that isn’t saying much this season. Poland has talent from Leeds United, Union Berlin, Napoli, Fiorentina, and Aston Villa – it’s just that none of them have yet to make a name for themselves yet.
Qatar will mark Poland’s 9th World Cup appearance. They’ve finished in third place twice, though they haven’t done so in 40 years. In 2022, Poland has performed well, only losing to Belgium and the Netherlands, defeating Sweden and USMNT Group B rival Wales (twice) over the same period.
Tournament Prediction: Round of 16 loss to France.
Group C will be a battle for second place because no team stands a chance against Messi’s Argentina in 2022. Poland opens their World Cup campaign against Mexico on November 22 in a winnable match for the Eagles. Poland should pick up three more points against Saudi Arabia before losing to Argentina, maybe pulling off a tie if the group status is already set. Poland should be good to make it to the round of 16 where they will lose Group D winner France, probably something like 3-1.
