Matches like Marseille vs. Sporting CP are why we love Champions League football so, so much.
Where else can you see four goals and a red card in a matter of 26 minutes?
Yesterday’s Marseille-Sporting CP Group D battle saw bottom-of-the-group Marseille top group leaders Lisbon in one of the wildest starts in UCL history.
Before the game even started, the Marseille coach was yelling at the referee for starting the game late, because Sporting CP’s bus was late.
Then, in the first minute, Sporting CP’s Francisco Trincão did this:
Wonderful. It seemed as if the Portuguese club would continue winning while the Frenchies continued losing.
But only ten minutes later, Alexis Sanchez turned the tables with this schoolyard goal.
That’s embarrassingly bad and lazy from Sporting GK Antonio Adan, but he was just getting started.
Two minutes later, Adan didn’t even dive for this go-ahead header.
Sensing all was lost, Adan ended his own game only 10 minutes later.
Yikes. This is an atypical performance from Sporting CP, who remain at the top of Group D despite the French spanking (some people pay extra for that).
Marseille was far from finished – here they are rubbing lemons on Sporting’s wounds only three minutes after the red card.
Marseille won 4-1 in a relatively subdued final hour of the match.
