The Champions League is on international break till October 4 after two weeks of unpredictable group stage action.
The opening matches have seen dozens of top-shelf bangers, but we’ve somehow managed to narrow the list down to five.
In place of new UCL coverage, let’s look back at the top five goals of the 2022/23 Champions League seasons so far.
5 – Mbappe – PSG
Match: PSG-Juventus, Week 1
Neymar’s clairvoyant chip, Mbappe’s one-touch, the aggressive attack speed, the perfect side-netting placement… What’s not to love about this French golazo?
4 – Leroy Sane – Bayern Munich
Match: Inter Milan-Bayern Munich, Week 1
We would argue this is a higher-difficulty version of the Neymar-Mbappe goal above. Sane controls a bombing through ball with the softness of a feather before finishing it past two defenders and the keeper.
3 – Alex Grimaldo – Benfica
Match: Benfica-Maccabi Haifa, Week 1
US international GK Josh Cohen of Maccabi Haifa had no chance of stopping this interplanetary rocket from Grimaldo. Had the net ripped, the shot would’ve likely killed a spectator.
2 – Arthur Gomez – Sporting CP
Match: Sporting CP-Tottenham, Week 2
Sporting CP’s Arthur Gomez deserves three points for this double-nutmeg goal. SCP and Benfica are proving Liga Portugal is far from a farmer’s league. This would be the number one goal if it weren’t for the pure insanity of the top contender.
1 – Erling Haaland – Manchester City
Match: Man City-Dortmund, Week 2
You knew this was coming when you started this list. It’s the high-kick heard around the world – Haaland’s maniacally acrobatic high-shin against his former teammates for the win. This goal is an instant classic, will likely be transformed into a Bundesliga-esque t-shirt, and will go down as one of the greatest UCL goals of all time.
