The US Guide has been off for two weeks, but that didn’t stop top European squads from being on.
From Erling Haaland’s back-to-back hatties to Man U’s three-game winning streak, here are the top moments from the past fortnight of football, pulled straight from our Twitter page.
#FreePulisic
The hashtag has taken USMNT Twitter by storm after Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea has played terribly to start the new season. Tuchel has essentially said that Pulisic belongs on the bench even though his starting attack has failed to produce many goals. With the summer transfer window closing and Aubameyang joining, it appears the 2022 World Cup may be the only chance USMNT fans have to see Pulisic truly freed.
The Confusing Case of Liverpool
Over the last three games, Liverpool has been many things. They began above by being the first victims of Manchester United’s current three-game winning streak. They followed the surprising 2-1 loss with a 9-0 thumping of Bournemouth, who had defeated Man U 4-0 just weeks earlier.
Then, to top it all off, Liverpool pulled off a last-gasp winner against Newcastle, bringing their current winning streak to two.
The Erling Haaland Effect
While Liverpool has been down and up, Erling Haaland’s stock has only been rising.
After netting a second-half hat trick in Man City’s come-from-behind 4-2 win over Crystal Palace, Haaland scored three more against Nottingham Forest.
Haaland now has 9 goals in 5 games for his new Premier League club, exceeding even the most enthusiastic fan’s expectations.
Casemiro Joins the Cause
Though he has yet to start for Ten Hag, Casemiro shocked the soccer world by leaving reigning Champions League champs Real Madrid for a floundering little club called Man U. The Red Devils, who just added Ajax’s Antony to their roster, are undefeated since Casemiro’s signing.
The Champions League Draw
There are more Americans than ever in this year’s UEFA Champions League, including the gutsy Malik Air Tillman.
Though Dest is now with AC Milan and Pulisic is seeing less and less playing time, there is still plenty of reasons for USMNT fans to be thrilled.
Champions League fans everywhere were delighted to see the yearly traditions of Bayern drawing Barcelona and Real Madrid drawing Shahktar continued once again.
All Going According to Plan in LaLiga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1
While this list is Premier League heavy, it’s worth noting that things in other major leagues are mostly going according to plan. Real Madrid and Barcelona are doing well in LaLiga, though up-and-coming Real Betis is undefeated like Madrid.
Messi, Neymar, Mbappe, and the rest of PSG are dominating Ligue 1, just like they always will. They suffered a tie against Monaco, proving why they won’t win the Champions League during a World Cup year.
Serie A is currently led by Atalanta, with Roma, Juventus, Napoli, and both Milan teams chasing close behind.
And even though USMNT forward Jordan Pefok has Union Berlin chasing Bayern in the Bundesliga, it is still undeniably Munich’s league until further notice.
