The US Guide’s Weekend Transfer Round-Up: Will Lewy Be Registered in Time for La Liga?

Europe’s top leagues are back in full swing as teams desperately try to squeeze last-minute transfers through a closing window.

Huge signings like Erling Haaland, Darwin Nunez, Marc Cucurella, Sadio Mane, and Brenden Aaronson (BA7) are already proving valuable to their new squads.

But major teams like Barcelona and Chelsea still have work left to do if they want their summer transfers to be a success – here’s what happened over the weekend.

Though Barcelona’s many new expensive signings can thrash Pumas all they want (and they did, 6-0), ESPN’s Samuel Marsden reports that La Liga will prevent the Catalan Kings from registering all their new players in time.

At this time, there has not been a definite word from La Liga or Barcelona on whether the new signings will play against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, Barca’s opening La Liga fixture. But despite apparently not having enough money to register current signings, FCB President Joan Laporta says they intend to sign Spanish defender Marcos Alonso from Chelsea (and possibly Bernardo Silva from Manchester City) before it’s all said and done. Fabrizio Romano, football’s transfer oracle, says the deal will go through this week.

Diving deeper into the strange relationship between Chelsea and Barcelona, there are still talks of Barca sending Frenkie de Jong and Pierre Aubameyang to the Blues, despite their stellar form. (There’s also a lot of financial/contract drama going on between de Jong and Barca, but that’s for another article.) Chelsea would be glad to have them both, especially after offloading Timo Werner to RB Leipzig after his disappointing stint in London. Leipzig also signed RB Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko this weekend over the floundering Red Devils.

Meanwhile, Manchester United is trying to lure Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot after failing to sign Frenkie de Jong themselves. Whoever Man U signs, Wayne Rooney says they need to get rid of Ronaldo ASAP, who desperately wants a transfer to a UCL-bound team, especially after losing to Brighton on Saturday.
