After losing defenders to La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid over the summer, Chelsea finally pulled one back on Spain.
Earlier today, Chelsea announced the official signing of highly sought-after Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella.
Barcelona was reportedly also fighting to sign the Spaniard after a potential transfer to Man City fell through for the left-back.
Chelsea’s left defense has been anchored by the ferocious Antonio Rudiger for years. The German is now playing a Sergio Ramos-type role with Real Madrid, terrorizing La Liga for the foreseeable future.
The Chelsea-Barcelona transfer drama runs deep. Chelsea also lost Andreas Christensen, another defender, to the Catalan Giants. Barca, for their part, has tried unsuccessfully to lure Cezar Azpilicueta, yet another Spanish defender, from Chelsea all offseason. However, Barcelona also signed Sevilla defender Jules Kounde over the Blues, deepening the defensive rivalry. Now Chelsea has won Cucurella over La Blaugrana, but the story still isn’t over – multiple sources are reporting a possible Frenkie de Jong and Pierre Aubameyang transfer to London from Catalonia. It’s hard to tell whether the two clubs love or hate one another.
Chelsea has been clearing out defenders in a rebuild, sending USMNT hopeful Matt Miazga back to the MLS just the other day. Brighton has also announced they will receive Chelsea defender Levi Colwill on a season-long loan, presumably as part of the Cucurella agreement.
