Top Clubs Chelsea and Barcelona Battling It Out for American Stars

For the second time in a month, an American is at the center of trade talks between Barcelona and reigning Champions League champs Chelsea.

This time, it’s not Captain America the two clubs are fighting over.

It’s stand-out right back Sergiño Dest, who Thomas Tuchel desperately needs to replace Reece James.

Less than a month ago, ESPN reported Barcelona had an interest in American striker Christian Pulisic for a January transfer. That move has yet to come to fruition, and now a different American appears to be on the verge of switching the two iconic jerseys.

Dest has been outstandingly for the Catalonian Kings despite their recent coaching, financial, and personnel struggles. Dest has been highly sought after by Europe’s top clubs, including Messi’s PSG, Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich, and now Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea needs a Reece James replacement, by no means an easy task. Dest, perhaps, is the most well-suited player in the world for the challenge.

For their part, Barcelona has shown significant interest in acquiring two Spanish stars from the Men in Blue. It is still unclear they can cut a deal for Chelsea defenders César Azpilicueta or Marcos Alonso.

An American for American swap between such momentous clubs would be a milestone for US soccer and US soccer fans the world over.
